Caledonia To Start Auditing Properties Claiming Tax Exemption

Tax exempt properties will have to fill out a longer state form this year and it's been at least eight years since they've done it.

Tax-exempt property owners will have to fill out a four-page application to receive their tax-exempt status next year.

In past years, tax-exempt property owners filled out a one-page form.

The plans to use the longer form exemption request to audit tax-exempt properties, which they were supposed to do every two years. However, they haven't sent out the longer forms since at least 2003, said Kevin Wanggaard, a Village Board member and member of the Legislative and Licensing Committee.

Elaine Ekes, the Village attorney, told the Legislative License Committee that the assessor will send out an application to all non-profits claiming exempt to update their records in January, which will need to be turned in by March 1. A number of other communities have done audits to make sure their exemption is justified.

If entities claiming a property tax exemption request don't fill out the form, they could be denied the exemption.
