Vos, Wanggaard Back Governor's Vision in Budget Proposal

Caledonia's legislators said the Gov. Scott Walker fixes the state finances while preserving local services.

Gov. Scott Walker's plan fits with what Racine County families are asking Madison's legislators to do, State Rep. Robin Vos said Tuesday after the governor's budget address.

Vos, a Republican who represents Caledonia in the Assembly, said Walker laid out a pretty clear vision for the state. As for school districts' concerns that they'll have to layoff teachers, Vos said he didn't see it.

“I don’t know why they would have to do that,” Vos said, adding that the Racine Unified School District would incur a savings with the pension and health insurance.

Vos also praised the increases in the tourism budget by 50 percent and an incentive that will be given to businesses that choose to keep the jobs of people who are retiring in state.

State Sen. Van Wanggaard, a Republican who represents Caledonia, said he was disappointed that the 14 Democratic senators who are still in Illinois weren’t at the budget address.

“I don’t think they realize that when they aren’t here, they are also taking my vote away,” he  said. “And that’s not a Republican or a Democrat idea, that’s my right.”

Wangaard said he felt the governor's budget addressed several key elements that were important to him.

“This helps us with getting our finances straight,” he said
