Spike 'n Splash Brings Excitement to North Beach This Weekend

A weekend of exciting, family fun is almost here!  The Spike 'n Splash Festival combines beach volleyball with watercraft racing at Racine's North Beach. This weekend in Racine County also includes music, celebration and a little summer star gazing.


            Spike 'n Splash action!  What combines the action of professional beach volleyball and watercraft racing?  It's the Spike 'n Splash Festival presented by Real Racine at North Beach on Saturday and Sunday, June 15-16. Two-person EVP Pro Beach Volleyball teams will compete in pro and amateur divisions for cash prizes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and for the finals from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday. The Grand Prix of Watercross brings more than 200 watercraft teams to vie for $10,000 in prizes in head-to-head and freestyle divisions. The watercross competition runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Spectator admission is free to all events. Food and beverages are available.

            Lighthouse Run.  The 35th annual Lighthouse Run is this Saturday morning. It includes 10-mile and 4-mile timed races as well as 4-mile and 2-mile fun run/walks. The races start near the Racine Family YMCA, 725 Lake Ave., and finish at Monument Square in Downtown Racine. The races start at 7:45 a.m. with the wheelchair division followed by the 10-mile run at 8 a.m., the 4-mile run at 8:15 a.m. and the fun run/walk at 8:20 a.m. Visitors should prepare for temporary street closures until about 10 a.m.  Runners may register at the Racine Family YMCA  from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. through Friday.             A Saturday celebration. "Catch the Spirit of Entrepreneurship" is the theme of the 2013 Juneteenth Day celebration set for 12-8 p.m. Saturday at the Dr. John Bryant Community Center, 601 21st St. Presented by the Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, the free event will feature vendors offering food, clothing and art. There will also be children's activities and a petting zoo. Juneteenth Day commemorates the 1862 signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, eliminating slavery.

 

            See the stars. You're invited for some summertime star gazing with the Racine Astronomical Society from 8:30 to 11 p.m. Friday. The telescopes at the Modine Benstead Observatory will be set up to view stars, planets and the moon. Stop by 112 63rd Drive, Yorkville. Please call ahead to check weather conditions at 262-878-2774.             New at the library.  Racine's heritage includes the memorable Little Golden Books that were produced locally for nearly 60 years. The Racine Public Library's new Golden Legacy Exhibit is now open through August 17. It includes the most extensive public showing ever of the original illustrations that were used in the popular books.  The library, located at 75 Seventh Street, is open Monday through Saturday.
