Where the Wild Things Are

The animals aren't the only wild things at the Racine Zoo this Sunday. You'll find a wild collection of cars, trucks and motorcycles.  That's not all. Racine County is brimming with live music, entertainment and shopping bargains all weekend long. Come along with Real Racine for these ideas.


Cars and trucks and bikes, oh my!  Some of the wildest things won't be behind bars at the 18th Annual Racine Zoo Car, Truck and Bike Show this Sunday, Aug. 18. The zoo, 2131 N. Main St., expects nearly 400 custom cars, trucks and motorcycles from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Trophies will be awarded in 23 vehicle classes, including antique, stock, modified and street rods. There will be three best of show awards. The entry fee is $15 per vehicle. Call 262-636-9189 or visit www.racinezoo.org for details. Regular zoo admission applies for spectators - $7 adults, $6 seniors and $5 kids ages 3 through 15. Admission is $1 additional for non-Racine County residents.

Season finale.  The Music and More Concert Series wraps up its 20th season with a special performance at 7 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Ave.  You'll see Zachary Scot Johnson (singer/songwriter), Suzanne Geoffrey (oboe, English horn) with Wayne Wildman (piano). Also Randy Bush (piano) and Kate Potter-Barrow (vocal). Tickets are $10 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Racine Vocational Ministry,Health Care Network and the Hospitality Center at St. Luke's Church.

Music on the river.  The weekend starts Thursday in Waterford! River Rhythms presents blues singer/guitarist Anthony Gomes from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Village Hall Park, 123 N. River St. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy a free concert along the river.

 

Bargains galore. The summer Sidewalk Sale Days are back in West Racine. Stop by the Washington Avenue and West Boulevard area for special deals outside each participating merchant.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

 

Home-grown 5K.  Put on your running shoes for the annual Iron Horse 5k in Sturtevant. Registration opens at 7 a.m. Saturday at Firemen's Park, 9698 Charles St. The run starts at 8 a.m. The fee is $20 per person. The Iron Horse 5k supports recreation opportunities in the Village of Sturtevant.

 

Don't wait!.  The Racine Symphony Orchestra's Summer Pops concert on Friday, Aug. 23 is expected to be a sellout. The concert is 7 p.m. at Festival Hal, 5 Fifth St. Door open at 5:30 p.m. The theme is "Celebrating Racine!" Featured artists are Curt Hanrahan, saxophonist and flutist, and singer Bob Benson. Maestro Laurino will present the RSO Pops performing music from John Williams’ The Mission and The Star Wars Suite.  Rumor has it that  Darth Vader may make an appearance.
